Radio systems in the telecommunications and broadcasting fields, as seen in mobile phones, wireless LAN, ITS, machine to machine (M2M) communication, digital broadcasting, etc. have become more and more sophisticated and diversified with the rapid advances in digital technologies.

They are expected to serve as an infrastructure that supports economic and social activities as well as creates a new culture.

Towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the expanded use of radio waves utilizing digital technologies is expected to promote the establishment of the world's most advanced wireless broadband environment and the realization of next-generation broadcasting services.

It is further expected that international cooperation aiming at establishing harmonized international standards for radio systems will be a key factor in carrying out research and development (R&D) of new radio systems and standardizing them.

With these points in mind, the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) performs studies, R&D and standardization work related to effective radio wave use in the telecommunications and broadcasting fields. ARIB also conducts activities involving consultation on radio spectrum coordination to use radio waves more efficiently, and liaison and cooperation with related foreign organizations. These activities are conducted with the support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the participation of telecommunication operators, broadcasters, radio equipment manufacturers and radio related organizations.

I am hopeful that through these activities ARIB will be able to effectively contribute to the development of radio wave use. I request and appreciate your continued support and cooperation in helping us to achieve this goal.
